Order in a Small Bathroom: 5 Things to Check When Choosing a Laundry Hamper
The thing that takes up most room in a bathroom is usually the dirty laundry. A well-chosen hamper hides the laundry and, with a shelf on top, gives you extra storage.
1. Measure the depth, not the width
In narrow bathrooms the problem is depth, not width. A unit 30 cm deep will not block the walkway; a 45 cm model will get in the way of the door. Tape the footprint on the floor first and try it.
2. Tilting basket or removable fabric basket?
A tilting basket opens one-handed, which is practical in a house with children. A removable fabric inner basket makes carrying the laundry to the machine easier. Models that offer both are the most useful.
3. Ventilation is essential
Closed plastic baskets trap moisture and start to smell. A slatted bamboo frame lets air circulate, so damp towels do not go mouldy.
4. Count the shelf above it
A single-shelf model is enough for towels and shampoo. A two-shelf, 120 cm model solves storage on its own in a home with no bathroom cabinet.
5. The material must handle damp
Chipboard swells in a bathroom. Bamboo is naturally moisture resistant — even so, place it where it will not be splashed directly.
Get the measurements right and pay attention to ventilation, and the hamper stops being something that takes up room and becomes the centre of order in the bathroom.
