How to Lay a Breakfast Table: Balance on a Table for Six
A crowded breakfast table quickly starts to look cluttered. The problem is not the number of dishes but the placement and the balance of heights.
Clear the ground first
Define the centre of the table with a runner or a flat tray. Once there is a defined area in the middle, the plates around it stop looking scattered.
Use the vertical
The surface of the table is limited; its height is not. A tiered stand carries cheese, olives and jam one above the other; the same items lined up side by side would take half the table.
The rule of three colours
Keep to three main colours on the table at most. A white or cream ground, one natural tone (bamboo, wood) and one accent colour (a patterned set) is enough.
Within everyone's reach
On a table for six, no shared dish should be more than 40 cm from anyone. If it is, put out two of the same dish or use a rotating stand.
Separate hot from cold
Gathering hot items such as eggs and pastries in one area makes the service flow naturally, so nobody has to walk around the table.
Create a difference in height and limit the number of colours, and a table laid with exactly the same dishes will look far more spacious.
