8 Ideas That Free Up Space in the Kitchen
A lack of space in the kitchen usually comes not from having too few cupboards but from not using the space outside them. Here are eight ideas that clear the counter.
1. Go vertical
Three dishes standing side by side on the counter fit into a single footprint on a tiered stand. This is the solution that helps most at breakfast and when you have guests.
2. Take vegetables out of the cupboard
Potatoes rot in a cupboard and turn sweet in the fridge. A ventilated vegetable rack on castors gives the right storage conditions and can be pushed into a corner when needed.
3. Choose dishes that nest
A bowl, a strainer and a grater take up three separate shelf spaces; a nesting set takes as much room as a single dish.
4. Use the space over the sink
A folding colander that rests on the sink removes the need for a permanent colander on the counter entirely.
5. Do not forget the backs of doors
The inside of a cupboard door is a ready-made surface for hanging towels and small organisers.
6. Leave the step stool in view
Instead of dragging a chair over to reach the top shelf, a decorative step stool is always to hand and does not look out of place in the kitchen.
7. Use containers of the same size
Storage containers of different sizes and brands will not stack. Sticking to one range visibly improves how much a shelf holds.
8. Keep only daily items on the counter
Put away anything you use less than once a week. An empty-looking counter makes the kitchen look bigger than it is.
Most of these eight ideas call for the right product rather than a new cupboard. A small change wins square metres in the kitchen.
